Porto & North Tourism Thermometer No. 1: the North leads, flights get pricier and 2027 heats up
Fortnightly tourism forecast · No. 1 · October 2026 · Porto, Douro, Minho and Trás-os-Montes. This edition was sent to subscribers on 14 October 2026 (in Portuguese). Subscribe for free to get it the day it comes out.
The North keeps growing faster than the rest of the country, but expensive fuel is pushing up air fares and low-cost airlines are cutting winter seats across Europe. For spring, Easter on 28 March, new routes to the UK, Germany and the US, and the 2027 Compostela Holy Year are raising the temperature.

The temperature: next 9 months in Porto and the North
Scale from 0 (cold) to 100 (hot).
58° · MILD Oct–Dec 2026 · Next 3 months
Mild. It's low season, but the North is growing around 5% this year and there are peaks: Champions League at the Dragão (20 Oct and 4 Nov), the Porto Marathon (8 Nov) and Christmas. Pricier air fares hold things back a little.
How we got here: historical baseline 56 · growth in the North +3 · events +1 · pricier flights −2 = 58°
46° · COLD Jan–Mar 2027 · 3 to 6 months
The coldest stretch of the year: January and February are the weakest months. March warms up with Holy Week (21 to 28 March), and the spas inland help in winter.
How we got here: historical baseline 42 · growth in the North +3 · Easter in March +3 · pricier flights −2 = 46°
72° · HOT Apr–Jun 2027 · 6 to 9 months
Hot. New Ryanair routes to the UK and Germany, a daily flight from Philadelphia and the Compostela Holy Year drawing walkers to the Portuguese Way. April loses Easter, and fares may rise if fuel doesn't come down.
How we got here: historical baseline 70 · growth in the North +3 · new routes +2 · Holy Year +2 · Easter outside April −3 · summer fares −2 = 72°
How we calculate it: the historical baseline is the average of overnight stays in the North in 2023–2025, with August = 100 (INE, via Turismo de Portugal). Each edition's signals adjust it by up to 10 degrees up or down. It is an editorial reading, and the method is refined with your feedback.
What moves the temperature: signals in this edition
↑ Warming pushes demand up
↔ Shifting moves demand to other dates
! Watch a risk to follow
↑ Warming The North is the fastest-growing region in the country
Now · Whole North
In August, overnight stays in the North rose 4.5% and those of non-residents 6.3%, the biggest increases in the country. From January to July, Porto and the North grew 5.5% in overnight stays. The US is already the No. 1 market for the Douro and No. 2 for the region (+9.3%).
Action → demand is holding up prices: the average price per room rose 3% nationally in August. Don't get into a price war this winter.

! Watch Expensive fuel pushes up air fares; Ryanair and easyJet cut winter seats
Nov 2026 – Mar 2027 · Flights
Ryanair is reducing flights between November and March and warns that, if oil stays expensive, short-haul fares will rise in summer 2027. easyJet is removing around 700,000 seats in winter. Jet fuel costs more than double what it did a year ago, which weighs on fares on every route. It's not yet known whether Porto will lose flights: the airlines haven't detailed cuts by airport.
Action → keep an eye on Porto airport's winter schedules. With pricier fares, focus on early bookings and on the Spanish market, which arrives by road.
Affects: everyone, especially short breaks. Sources: ECO · The Portugal News · Euronews
↑ Warming New routes for 2027: Bournemouth, Exeter, Friedrichshafen and Philadelphia
Mar 2027 → · Porto · Flights
Ryanair announced three new routes from Porto for summer 2027, connecting the city to 10 destinations in the UK and 9 in Germany. American Airlines will fly Philadelphia–Porto daily from 28 March 2027, the 4th direct link to the US.
Action → prepare communication in English and German for spring. The regional markets of southern England are new to Porto.
↑ Warming The Portuguese Way breaks records and 2027 is a Holy Year
2027 · Porto and Minho · Camino de Santiago
By 30 September, the two Portuguese routes of the Camino de Santiago had 191,298 pilgrims, 18% more than in 2025. Almost 50,000 started in Porto. Galicia is already preparing for the 2027 Compostela Holy Year, expecting many more visitors.
Action → in Porto and the Minho, offer early check-in, storage for backpacks or bikes, and laundry. For operators: luggage transfer and Porto–Valença packages.
Affects: short-term rentals · hotels · restaurants · transfers. Sources: Diario de Pontevedra · Diario de Pontevedra (Sept.)
↔ Shifting Easter on 28 March: the season starts earlier and April gets weaker
Mar – Apr 2027 · Calendar
In 2027, Holy Week runs from 21 to 28 March. In 2026, Easter was on 5 April, so much of that demand fell in April. March 2027 should come in above last year and April below, even if the year goes well.
Action → boost staff and stock for 21 to 28 March. For April, plan promotions and don't compare only with April 2026.
Affects: everyone. Sources: Easter calendar 2026–2027.
! Watch Douro: a difficult harvest and a river at its limit for hotel boats
Now – 2027 · Douro
With more grapes and Port wine sales down over 10% in the first half, the Government approved €12 million to support unpicked grapes. On the river, the port authority (APDL) is not accepting new hotel boats until it assesses the Douro's capacity (around 30 operate). The waterway carried 1.14 million passengers in 2025.
Action → with cruise capacity frozen, there is room for land-based stays and day tours. At the quintas, wine tourism already accounts for around 30% of sales.

What to do now: advice by type of business
If you run accommodation (hotels, short-term rentals, guest houses)
Don't cut winter prices without getting something in return: the North is outgrowing the country and the average price is rising. Use packages (3+ nights, spas, Douro) instead of plain discounts. Create promotions that add value to the stay.
Adjust prices on the strong dates: 20 October and 4 November (Champions League), 8 November (Marathon), Christmas in Braga and Guimarães, and Holy Week (21 to 28 March).
Get ready for the 2027 Holy Year: storage for luggage and bikes, (very) early breakfasts and one-night stays for pilgrims on the Portuguese Way.
If you run a restaurant (restaurants, cafés, bars, wine shops)
Match and marathon nights fill the week: add staff and have a quick menu for fans and runners.
Before spring, have your menu in English and online bookings on your Google Business Profile. The US is already the No. 1 market for the Douro, and the Philadelphia flight starts on 28 March to add to it.
In the Douro and inland, make the most of wine tourism and off-season spa visits with menus from local producers, and don't forget domestic guests.
If you run a tourism services company (tours, experiences, museums, transfers)
With the Douro at its limit for hotel boats, there is room for day tours from Porto, Régua and Pinhão.
Build products for pilgrims in 2027: backpack transfers, guides and transfers between Porto and the Minho.
In winter, focus on indoor and wellness experiences (tastings, spas, crafts) sold through hotels and rentals.
